I guess i talk for many racing fans when I'm saying that the online genre of free racing games is pretty slim (Growing tho) And even amongst these few games, most of them are party games. Well good news for all you who wants a serious racing game! Project torque is probably the closest thing you can come to a “racing simulator” for free.
The whole game is build up around online gameplay, in short. All matches you race are fought online against other players, this is working very good to. Its build up with several servers, for each time you log in you will be choosing a server, don't worry to all your cars and stats will be on all servers.
The game has a customization module, kinda reminding of the one seen in Gran Turismo. For each race you complete you will be awarded an in game currency wich can then later be used to buy new cars, which can then be custom build by putting in a new engine brakes handling and so on. And for all you fast and the furious fans theres even a “pimping” selection of parts, containing of sidescirts, spiffy color jobs and so on.
The game engine is somewhat standard of what you would expect from a free game, its nothing to fancy altho it seems completely free of sudden crashes. The user interface is somewhat buggy to use, for example the chat bar seems to be incredibly stubborn, you can move it and move it, but each time you reload it will be back in its weird out of screen position. The cars have a somewhat good feel to them. Its easy to feel its not a real car simulator as you see in some newer games as GRID or GT 4. But it is unsuspectingly good for a free game.
So if your the kind of person who loves playing racing games where you can custom your car to be the fastest on the road, or simply the local showcase, as well as enjoying to race against allot of other people. This is a game for you.
