Onverse, or the Online Universe, is a social virtual world. A social world is a world that revolves around hanging out with friends; it’s as simple as that. We built Onverse in this style because it is a great platform to build out from. Why build a world focused on sci-fi, or vehicles, or maybe a western? Why not build a place that you can come back to from any genre of game? This is what this social world platform gives us. We’re the place you always come back to from your adventures to unload your loot, buy stuff and chat with your friends. It also allows us to really connect with our players, because they can have a direct influence on what gets developed and attached. Why would we not listen to people and build what they want? We already know it will be enjoyed.

Okay, enough with the babbling psychoanalysis… what the heck can I do in Onverse? In this early phase of beta, Onverse is all about exploring with your equipment to get Player Points (PPs), using those PPs at our central shopping area, the Hub, and taking your new gear back to deck out your pad and outfit your avatar. There are plenty of socializing activities as well such as chatting, dancing in our clubs or participating in seasonal events. The Shark Tank dance club is particularly popular, where you can get your groove on inside of a giant aquarium filled with sharks while listening to hip-hop and dance music.

Everyone can get a free apartment in Onverse. Each apartment community has 40 apartments where you can live next to your friends. When your apartment gets too full of furniture and you’ve accumulated a good amount of PPs you can ditch your apartment and upgrade to a house. Volcano Island is our first of many planned housing communities, each with their own theme. There are over 40 homes in these communities, ranging from small bungalows to huge mansions. There are stunning views from these homes of pirate ships, a live volcano, reefs, sunset, geysers and waterfalls.

Oh, did I mention that we are fully integrated into a web social network as well? Set up your profile, your photos, your videos, find friends and keep tabs on them, leave comments, mail, etc. This allows you to keep up with friends, even when you can’t log in or don’t have time. We constantly monitor our forums as well so we can move in the directions the community wants. We even have a forum dedicated specifically for user-ideas for furniture and clothing. If we like your idea and it’s feasible, we’ll put it in the game.

Onverse is still in its infancy, we just opened up our beta on June 15th, but already we’ve had two updates filled with new items (we have over 1000 already), new content, fixes, changes and other additions. We just released our first event for the Fourth of July celebration where you can use sparklers to light off firework cannons and then reap the rewards as PPs shoot out of the explosions.

We are still in a process of solidifying our foundation and reducing barriers to entry, but the future of Onverse is blanketed in ideas. Our goals are to, as I stated above, branch out new things to do, games to play, places to go, and content to devour. We plan to bring more web functionality game-side, so you can use your uploaded media in the world, as well as bring more game functionality web-side so you can keep up on everything in the world just by hitting your web profile. Above all else though, the goal of Onverse will always be to give you and your friends a fun place to hang out online.

OZ is a virtual world released in 1999 by the South Korean computer game developer Oz Intermedia. Instead of forcing players to compete against each other, this game promotes community and friendship by concentrating on friendly interactions and social gatherings. Players can own and customize their own homes and even get married.

Kaneva, Inc. is a privately owned Atlanta-based company founded in 2004 by Christopher Klaus and Greg Frame. Kaneva is a 3D Virtual World that supports 2D web browsing, social networking and shared media.

In 2004 Kaneva worked directly with Georgia’s Department of Economic Development to draft a new law into existence that would promote video game development in Georgia. Klaus, who was elected in 2004 to Gov. Sonny Perdue's Film, Video and Music Advisory Commission, courted the economic development department to come around to his way of thinking. Klaus played a key role in making sure an entertainment tax incentive bill passed in 2004 included the video game industry.

Kaneva was originally founded to develop a massively multi-player online game (MMOG) but its founders perceived a need in the gaming industry for a software solution that would aid in the development of games. In late 2004, Kaneva released the first version of their Kaneva Game Platform that included features to enable professional or independent game developers to develop games.

As Web 2.0 became more mainstream, Kaneva decided to use its own technology to develop a virtual world that combined video sharing, social networking and 3D environments into one place. In 2005, Kaneva started development on the Virtual World of Kaneva, the company’s flagship product. The Virtual World of Kaneva was released into beta in mid 2006.

This new direction, however, did not abandon the original focus of the Kaneva Game Platform. A new site was created in April 2006 to allow the community of game developers to collaborate on their projects. This site was named the Kaneva Elite Developers Site. Currently, the Kaneva Elite Developers have over a hundred games in development and thousands of active game developers.

The primary focus of Furcadia is user-created content. To this end, the Furcadia game download includes an art editor and a map creating program. Users are encouraged to create their own virtual worlds, called Dreams, using these tools. These worlds can be uploaded to the Furcadia server and used for a variety of purposes, examples being role playing, a place to hang out with friends, or a number of other purposes. Dreams remain open to the public area in which they are uploaded, so long as it is inhabited, and, if unoccupied, it is eventually unloaded automatically. Dreams can include the use of audio files in the WMA, Ogg, MOD, S3M, WAV and MIDI (.mid) formats, to name a few.

Most Dreams take advantage of a relatively user-friendly coding language known as DragonSpeak, or "DS". DragonSpeak allows users to develop interactivity into their dreams, ranging from a simple action like opening a door, to far more complex uses, such as a complete game of chess or laser-tag.

Dream owners are allowed to make and use bots to accomplish things that DragonSpeak cannot, but these are not officially supported by Furcadia.

Dreams run off several file types. ".MAP" files hold the main Dream layout, ".DS" files hold the DragonSpeak code, and ".FOX" (replacing the older ".FSH" format) and PCX files hold patch art for Furcadia. Every aspect of the Furcadia interface can be customized with Furcadia skins. Skins are made with a "marbled.pcx" file that is used for the background, two ".FOX" files (buttons.fox and the customizable dsbtns.fox), a settings file (skin.ini) and several fonts.

Several popular types of dreams are build-a-homes (where you can buy a temporary house from staff for free and decorate it with items, but is usually deleted after you leave the dream), hangout dreams (Usually featuring a bar or café area) and roleplay dreams. Furcadia hosts a wide variety of roleplaying dreams, ranging from strict-continuity roleplay (In which the dream is its own independent world) to persona play (Roleplay that is light and is governed by few rules). Roleplaying dreams also come in a myriad of different forms, ranging from feral (Feral wolf and horse dreams are immensely popular, concentrated in the Northeast region of the popular 'main map', Allegria Island) to furre to human. Many dreams revolve around fantasy plots and themes, based on popular books, television programs and even ancient mythology; some dream ideas are created entirely out of the minds of their creators.

Furcadia itself is basically made up of several dreams, the ones made by its users, and the main maps.

Project Entropia Overview and Features:

Entropia Universe is a massively multiplayer online virtual universe designed by Swedish software company MindArk, based in Gothenburg. In contrast to other similar MMORPGs, MindArk's software is distributed free of charge with no subscription fees. The developers instead have decided to use a variant of the micropayment economic model, which consists of buying in-game currency (PED - Project Entropia Dollars) with real money that can be redeemed back into real world funds at a fixed exchange rate with the US dollar, where 10 PED = $1 USD. This means that virtual items acquired within Entropia Universe have a real cash value, and a participant may, at any time, initiate a withdrawal of their accumulated PEDs back into real world currencies according to the fixed exchange rate, minus transaction fees, this works from sum of 1000 PED or more. As a result, revenue of the business is largely generated from activities within the virtual universe. The revenue model has historically proven to be sustainable and is currently profitable.

The Entropia Universe is a direct continuation of Project Entropia, with MindArk reporting a 2006 in-game turnover of over 3.6 Billion PED ($360 Million USD). Strategic partnerships with media companies and financial institutions combined with the addition of new or enhanced developer tools in 2008 are expected to allow for the construction of new planets, to exist within the financial structure of Entropia Universe, for third party content providers to develop and market independently.

The Entropia online community claims to have over 800,000 registered participants from over 220 countries and 80.000-100.000 active player fanbase (now unused accounts permanently expire after 330 days, with no notice to the participant other than the original EULA). However, it should be noted that only 193 nation states have general international recognition through the United Nations, though this discrepancy may be explained by the separate inclusion of dependent territories of other already listed nation states.

The Entropia Universe entered the Guinness World Records Book in both 2004 and 2008 for the most expensive virtual world objects ever sold.

• Production: Build better items from production orders (PO) of weapons, amplifiers and ships. Production orders are "recipes" that must be delivered along with its ingredients to specialized agents that will build you a new item.

• Missions: Start your new life as a freelancer, working for the Aster Patrol, consortiate corporations or even the Independents. By accomplishing missions you get in touch with different agents and travel across the space. Plus, you can save some taels to buy better equipments. There are missions involving combat, exploration and commerce. It doesn't matter what profession you choose, there are several missions to accomplish.

• Agents: In Taikodom there are some characters that achieved a spotlight position in space society. Others not so much. But all of them have their story to tell and a profession to work upon. Agents are spread all over the universe and can help you by offering you jobs, fixing or building items, or even by competing with you for resources or wealth.

• Nodes: These are places in space where humankind established their cities. Human civilization is present in several sites around the Sun and the adjacent systems. As time goes by, new regions can come up and expand its borders.

• Space Stations: Gigantic facilities built inside each node. They serve as house, industry, commerce and entertainment place for all space commuity. It is inside the stations that the markets can be found, deals can be made, pilots can look for or offer jobs, and corporations establish their advanced outposts.

• PDA: Everything a character can learn or interact in the game will be stored in the Intracranial Neural Organizer (ONI), and it can be accessed through the PDA, an advanced personal computer. Each time you talk to an agent, mine elements, or visit new markets, new data become available about what was discussed.

• Second monetary currency and Affiliation: Called hoplon, this alternative currency allows players to buy taels and affiliations. With hoplons they can also buy some exclusive items, like ships and weaponry. This new feature was implemented to balance player growth, thus providing players with less playing time to keep up with other players in the game. • Cameras: The standard camera, called chase cam, follows the ship in speeding, and falls back in abrupt breaks, creating the effect of an exciting pursuit to your ship, which only adds in mobility and emotion in combat. Players can also choose for a first person camera, and appreciate the view of the orbital camera, which allows the visualization of the stunning scenarios from multi-angle positions.

• Inertial flight: It's a flight system that allows a more accurate power regulation in handlings, changing the angle in curves and resulting in more dynamic combats.

• System for customizing display information on the interface: Choose the information you want available in navigation mode and combat mode. Just select the needle icon in the superior corner of the interface window. It's very helpful during combat or mining.

• A Universe in constant expansion: 10 Star Systems, dozens of nodes and stations, more than 50 agents, more than 200 missions and hundreds of different ship designs at your disposal.
