Frogster’s fantasy free MMORPG, Runes of Magic, will be entirely playable in a browser window and on Facebook starting in Q2/2011. The international publisher has signed an agreement with technology partner Kalydo. The Dutch middleware provider will realize the browser integration with a browser plug-in and a scalable server architecture running on a cloud computing platform that they have developed. Using the so-called Kalydo Player, the originally client-based MMORPG can then be enjoyed through any browser on practically every Windows PC without any constraints.

The initial focus of the partnership will be Facebook integration. For registration, the partners will use the social network’s user-friendly single-opt-in function, allowing every Facebook user to dive straight into the virtual world without having to complete any additional registration procedures. Once inside the social network, Runes of Magic can be played in either full screen or windowed mode without limiting any of the game’s functionality. The Kalydo team has already started with the technical implementation of the browser version. Frogster will show a first test version to selected media partners at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco from February 28th to March 4th. Frogster today announced that it has secured another promising MMORPG project. The international publisher of massively multiplayer online games (MMO games) licensed the unannounced client-based fantasy MMORPG from Chinese games giant Shanda Games for North America and Europe (excluding Russia and CIS states). The signing of this license represents the largest cooperation between Shanda Games, a leading online game developer and operator in the rapidly growing Chinese market, and a European publishing partner to date.

The licensed MMO game project sets itself apart with its setting developed for Western audiences. Frogster plans to launch the game in 2012 using the free-to-play business model with a free client download and game access. The game will work in the same way as Frogster’s hugely successful title ‘Runes of Magic’ and feature an item shop where players are able to purchase virtual goods and items.

“This deal with Shanda Games adds yet another prominent MMORPG to our portfolio. By licensing the game for North America and Europe, we have taken another step in establishing Frogster as one of the leading MMO game publishers in the world,” commented Andreas Weidenhaupt, member of the executive board and Chief Licensing Officer of Frogster, on the signing of the license.

Things are moving in Taborea, the online world of Runes of Magic. With the forthcoming Patch 3.0.6, Frogster is giving new challenges to its players. The new instance, Kawak’s Tomb, offers an amazing series of booby-traps and puzzles before players reach the last five guardians lurking in the tomb. Needless to say, bringing down these five tough new opponents will require new strategies and tactics.

Be it flipping the correct switch in one room, dodging spikes in another, or defeating opponents in the correct order, the new instance will put the heat on even the most experienced and best equipped players. As soon as the coast appears to be clear, the next guardian emerges, itching for a fight. This is assuming that players are able to find and open the half-concealed passages that lead to the bosses. A stronger opponent waits behind every door - a legendary general, a mutant beetle and three Rune Guardians possessing magical powers stand in the way of the golden sarcophagus of Kawak Angerfang.

A small scarab, invisible at first, also plays an important role, waiting for players in the passages of the tomb. There is much more to this tiny beetle than first meets the eye. Adventurers that rashly go after every glittering treasure chest will endanger their entire party, whereas gamers looking to discover the secrets of the legendary general, Kawak Angerfang, must prepare for a fight.

The Guardian’s Awakening brings new content to the world of Runes of Magic, where starting today, adventurers have access to the recently announced world boss Amboriar. The new difficulty levels for the dungeon, Raksha Temple, are also now available, giving players more options in how they play Runes of Magic.

Previously, the Raksha Temple group instance was available in two different difficulty levels for players level 58 and up: easy and normal. Adventurers can now also choose between five additional difficulty levels in normal mode. Opponent values are higher in other modes – ranging from 25% higher in bronze mode all the way up to 125% higher in diamond mode. The difficulty level selected also affects the loot acquired by groups consisting of six players.

To face Amboriar, however, a full group is not enough. Trouble is stirring in a remote mountain valley in Southern Janost Forest, and it will take a brave and well-equipped raid to vanquish the mighty and corrupt guardian who lurks there.

The latest content update for Runes of Magic just went live. “Warnorken Castle” adds several new features to the fantasy online role-playing game as part of the popular title’s third chapter, The Elder Kingdoms. Players can now prove their bravery in a new six-player dungeon, raise their own active pets and enjoy a ride on the highly anticipated two-player mounts.
The new active in-game pet system allows players to raise over 100 new virtual companions the way they want. With tender care they are able to grow their loyalty to turn them into valuable assets while adventuring in the most remote areas of Taborea.

Also added with the new update, groups of six adventurers can participate in tournaments organized in the “Warnorken Arena” by the blood-thirsty Baron Reuen von Jura. This new instance is available for players of level 58 and higher. Moreover, in the Southern Janost Forest, players will also be invited to fight in two new public encounters, a type of group quest in which players can take part in massive fights to reach a common goal.

Another addition to the game are the long awaited two-player mounts. At first, players can choose from four different mounts which allow them to share a ride with one of their friends. Players who own one of these new mounts will be able to offer fellow adventurers a lift very easily through a new interface option, accessible by right-clicking on a character.

Today sees the main expansion of the third chapter of Runes of Magic, “The Elder Kingdoms”. The game servers have just opened with the updated version again. The latest large expansion for the popular free-to-play Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) adds one unexplored new region on the new continent Zandorya with a challenging new dungeon to the game world. Besides many other new features like the new PvP battleground Tyrefen Mountain Range and an enhanced skills system, the update includes the introduction of integrated voice chat to improve communication between players. The gates to the third chapter of Runes of Magic have been opened. With the successful launch of update 3.0.0, ‘The King’s Call’, Frogster has just launched the first phase of the extensive expansion ‘The Elder Kingdoms’. Players can now set foot in the first region of the new continent of Zandorya with its imposing cities and vast estates to discover a large array of new game content. The hotly contested Kingdom of Dalanis can be reached by high-level online adventurers after completing a series of quests in the Aotulia Volcano region.

As Chapter III opens, players can expect new rewards including precious armor that can now be endowed with individual attributes by swapping gold and ‘Ancient Mementos’ for special items. In response to community feedback, less-experienced players can now select a difficulty level when entering the dungeons ‘Hall of Survivors’ and ‘Heart of the Ocean’. Cautious players can now also save their game progress in specific instances which means that when loading a saved game status, they no longer need to tackle bosses that they have already defeated.

This first phase of Chapter III also introduces an expanded in-game Monster Card System allowing players to gain valuable cards that are dropped by NPC opponents once they are defeated. The monster cards now have additional attribute points to improve their character’s stats. Update 3.0.0 also contains the announced three new guild drill grounds, six new guild quests and stone fortifications to expand the guild castles. Furthermore, elite skills have been adjusted in order to optimize the game balance.

As with all Runes of Magic expansions, the update is free and will install automatically when the game is started. Beginning in April players will be able to set foot on the previously forgotten continent of Zandorya and explore its first zone. Frogster is showing the first detailed glimpses into the ‘Thunderhoof Hills’ area and the kingdom of ‘Dalanis’ today. The integration of this high-level region gives players the first content from the main release of ‘Chapter III – The Elder Kingdoms’ which is due for release this May.

In the south of Zandorya lie the verdant Thunderhoof Hills which are surrounded by an imposing mountain range. The region is characterized by its green meadows, rushing waterfalls and wild rivers. Several settlements are nestled in this picturesque landscape as well as the Valley of Glory where mammoth effigies of ancient war heroes rise up to the sky as reminders of past glorious battles. These were the battles in which the legendary King Kalume and his mounted allies once fought against demons and after whom the region was named. Kalume recruited elves, dwarves and other creatures alongside humans such as the rhinoceros-like Kalo people. In recognition of their support Kalume divided up the land amongst these peoples so that the land of Thunderhoof Hills is still diversely populated today.

Players above Level 55 can wander through the zone starting from April and can discover the Kingdom of Dalanis situated at the heart of the Thunderhoof Hills. Its origins stem from the glorious period of Kalume and it is now ruled over by the young King Callaway. The glory days seem to be over for the kingdom which is now plagued by intrigue and revolt since some of the rulers of the six principalities have their sights set firmly on Callaway’s throne and the powers it brings. However, the King still recalls the region’s grand old days and wants to return Dalanis to its former glory and strength. He is being supported by one of the dynasty’s remaining loyal orders, the Lionheart Knights. This order is a thorn in the side of those who are scheming and plotting to overthrow the King and who will stop at nothing to get the faithful Callaway out of the picture. This situation is at its clearest in the instance ‘Dungeon of Dalanis’. Players can delve into this dungeon after the main release of the third chapter in May. Another setting for these power struggles is the stately stronghold of ‘Aren’ in the hills – the seat of power of one of the six principalities fighting for more control.

The task for the player is to support King Callaway in the battle against the insurgents and their foreboding schemes in the Thunderhoof Hills. Frogster has published the first screenshots today. On the 19th March Frogster’s Runes of Magic will celebrate its first birthday in the world of Taborea. In 12 months millions of European and North American players have experienced the online world of Taborea. Now Runes of Magic players will have a week-long Birthday celebration with special promotions and an in-game event.

Celebrations begin on Monday as the citizens of Taborea encounter lots of frogs in the game world. Lucky players who defeat the crawling amphibians will receive coins which can be exchanged for valuable items. For 24 hours on the 19th March, all adventurers who log in to the game will receive an exclusive house pet – a lucky frog which will increase their chance of finding rare items in the Runes of Magic game world. Frogster today announced that it will serve up the third chapter of Runes of Magic, titled 'The Elder Kingdoms' this May. Players can expect a new continent with unexplored regions, dungeons, a new skill system and an increase in the level cap to 60. Guild wars in the game will also be expanded with the addition of siege weapons.

'Chapter III – The Elder Kingdoms' will take players to a newly rediscovered continent. Here the old kingdom of Dalanis lies in chaos and turmoil with plotters scheming behind the throne of the child-king Callaway. Little remains of the old glory of the ruling dynasty from the time of the legendary King Kalume. In total desperation, the people long for the return of the old heroes. So now it is down to all brave adventurers to support the young regent and bring order to the chaos.

Level 55 and above adventurers will be able to take their first steps into a kingdom full of intrigue and uprisings when they enter the 'Thunderhoof Hills', the first territory in the 'The Elder Kingdoms'.

This is where a new zone concept comes into play in Runes of Magic. The design template for the new continent has moved away from closed, themed territories and has evolved into extensive, versatile and varied landscapes. So players who journey to the 'Thunderhoof Hills' will first enter the forests and pass by waterfalls and then enter one of the three new cities to trade and meet other players. Within the same zone, players can explore a mystery shrouded graveyard of long dead kings. One of the new instances, the 'Dungeon of Dalanis', leads adventurers into the world of shadows beneath the 'Thunderhoof Hills'. Here terrors lurk that are of such a dreadful nature they can only be overcome by utilizing every power from your group.

The history of the old kingdoms of Runes of Magic will be told in Chapter III through many new quests. Level 55 and above adventurers will become familiar with a new skill system where they can select from a pool of special abilities which will then be available to them in combat. There will also be plenty of opportunities to try out these new abilities in the new chapter, including in conflicts with other guilds. 'The Elder Kingdoms' also expands on the existing opportunities which guilds have to equip their castles with new buildings. Rival guilds will also be able to lay their hands on siege weapons. Quests for whole player communities, Player vs. Player rankings and reward systems, as well as a new battlefield – the 'Tyrefen Mountains' – bring additional depth to the PvP game. Three further mini-games have also been built into the game.

Frogster is already releasing some initial content from the third chapter in the run-up to launch in May. A zone from the new continent, as well as various opportunities for guilds to upgrade their castles, will be released in April to get people geared up for the official launch. Runes of Magic 'Chapter III - The Elder Kingdoms' will be a free download and free-to-play.

Polish language version on the starting blocks – Frogster is also continuing the localization of Runes of Magic and the Polish open beta begins on 16th February. The official release date in Poland is 2nd March.

The storming of the last haven of the Demon Lord has begun! Today, Runes of Magic’s new raid dungeon – the ‘Demon Stronghold’ – opens its gates. This is part of content patch '2.1.6 – Fall of the Demon Lord’, which Frogster will deploy across the servers on Wednesday.

Together with the new raid instance, the online role-playing game is also being expanded with an additional Public Encounter: ‘Bloodbath Valley’. This combat area for large groups, located in the Aotulia Volcano, is divided into four stages – the challenge for adventurers in this high-level area is to master them all. The goal in ‘Bloodbath Valley’ is to stem the threat of the Naga who are receiving support from a powerful guardian. But players aren't going to be facing the waves of Naga warriors on their own: Flaming demons and special Elven Commandos will battle side by side with the allied adventurers.

On a more peaceful note, the ‘Flower Festival’, the Taborean version of Valentine’s Day, is also beginning. Within this in-game event, amorous adventurers can plant roses or get themselves titles or costumes – including a birthday suit. There’s also a new mini-game to bring a little variety to heroes' everyday routines: There’s a packed treasure chamber waiting for players who enter a dungeon labyrinth and single-handedly can use their skills to tackle opponents and solve some tricky tasks.

Patch ‘2.1.6 – Fall of the Demon Lord’ also implements another epic quest series in Runes of Magic. This leads players, among other places, to the ‘Great Barrier’ which once kept the sinister Naga in exile. New elite skills, improvements in the hand crafting system, as well as balancing are also part of the update.

Frogster today announced that the company has now 40,000 Euros to children in adversity as part of a joint fund-raising promotion in collaboration with the children’s rights organisation ‘Save the Children Deutschland e.V.’

Under the promotion’s slogan, ‘Moa's Charity Steed for Save the Children’, players were able to go to the Runes of Magic Item Shop from November 20th through December 28th last year and buy themselves a special in-game mount. For each of the approximately 12,500 ‘Moa’s Charity Steeds’ sold within the promotional period, the Berlin publisher is now donating three Euros to the largest worldwide children’s rights organisation.

Kathrin Wieland, head of Save the Children Deutschland e.V. accepted the 40,000 Euro check from Frogster and commented, “We are extremely grateful for the donation. Save the Children will use the money to take care of children in the poorest countries of the world, helping them with medical care, providing schooling and giving them opportunities for the future.”

What does a volcano and a dragon have in common, apart from their ability to spew fire? Both of them appeared yesterday for the very first time in Taborea, the game world of Runes of Magic, courtesy of Patch 2.1. Just a few weeks following the release of the second chapter of Runes of Magic, the ‘Aotulia Volcano’, the hellish heart of the evil Naga empire, is now open for all gamers. The recently announced six-player dungeon, ‘Cave of the Water Dragon’, is also now live as player groups prepare to conquer the deranged dragon Lytfir.

High level players in particular will benefit from the free content update. Under glowing, ashen skies in the infernal zone around the ‘Aotulia Volcano’, there are numerous quests for players to complete. On their way through the almost impassable region to the heart of the enemy, only the bravest will be able to survive against the Naga and other aggressive creatures on their way to reaching the level 55 cap. In the new instance, ‘Cave of the Water Dragon’, player groups of six level 55 adventurers take on the epic challenge as they put their hard earned abilities to the test in combat with elemental beings and the unrestrained dragon.

In the course of the multi-staged release of the second chapter of Runes of Magic, “The Elven Prophecy”, Frogster will publish an additional content update next week. In conjunction with the ‘Aotulia Volcano’ zone, the publisher is adding the ‘Cave of the Water Dragon’ into the live version of the fantasy game world. The new dungeon offers groups of up to six players at the level cap of 55 to experience a fresh setting with new challenges and treasure.

Groups of adventurers will find access to the ‘Cave of the Water Dragon’ across the ‘Throne of the Water’ in the ‘Weeping Coast’ region. During their quest, the elemental being Polython will transport them into the throne room of Zanordoth, the old king of the Water Dragons. His demented son Lytfir has awoken from a lengthy slumber. With heavy heart, King Zanordoth banished the water dragon to the darkest corner of the cave after he turned against his alliance with the humans, forged long ago.

Now, player groups have the task of sending the quick-tempered dragon back to rest. To achieve this goal, they need to collect several soul essences from around the instance. But there are some powerful elemental beings that make life difficult. The essences will let players receive a crystal ball from Zanordoth, which they can use to recapture Lytfir, sending him back to sleep.

Two teams, two fortresses and one goal: To despatch hordes of monsters at your opponent until their fortress is levelled. The best means by which to do this: Towers in different variants and configuration levels. The familiar ‘Tower Defense’ mode found in many strategy titles is now available in Runes of Magic, under the name ‘The Visdun Fortress’.

Upon entering the tower defense mode arena, two teams of three players each have the ability to summon monsters. Alternatively, players can take to the battlefield and defend against the opponent’s hordes in melee combat. But, the most powerful way to defend against the attacks are a variety of five different towers. An Ice Tower slows down monsters on their way to your fortress, a Lightning Tower attacks five targets simultaneously, and an Arrow Tower attacks individual opponents, and in doing so wreaks huge damage.

The abilities of these bulwarks can be upgraded and players can upgrade them up to ten times. The right mix of towers and placement decide whether the player is victorious or defeated. Should a monster break through the defenses and reach your team, you lose hit points. The battle is over when a base’s hit points falls to zero.
