Dragonica: Major update

DragonicaDragonica is the free arcade-style 3D side-scrolling MMORPG developed by Barunson Interactive and published by Gala Networks Europe. Since successfully launching into Open Beta on June 10th 2009, hundreds of thousands of players across Europe have entered the world of Dragotaka in English, French and German versions of the game. Today marks the end of the Open Beta phase as the game enters full commercial service with a wide range of new features and content.

With the Tales of the Damned expansion, a wide range of new features have been introduced to Dragonica. First and foremost, controller support has now been added so players with Xbox 360, Playstation 3 or USB game pads can now simply plug their pad into their computer, set up their buttons and start playing. Legacy support for older SNES and Megadrive will continue to be maintained using free third party software.

The update also introduces a wide range of new regular and hero quests across all levels, an increase in the level cap to level 65, a new area called Van Cliff Manor, packed with four tough monsters including a massive Bone Dragon, new mission maps, field maps. A revised mission map scoring system has also been introduced, as well as an improved enchantment system. The hugely anticipated pets system has also been introduced, allowing players to get a companion from the three pets available, Husky the dog, Felix the cat and Griffon the bird.

The hugely anticipated Emporia Tournament system, allowing Guilds to pitch 25 players against each other in frentic arcade-style action has also been introduced, along with a wide range of minor updates across the game. With the end of the Open Beta, gPotato Europe wants to reassure players that there will be no character wipe, and that they can update the game by simply opening the launcher, downloading a free update, and logging into the game as normal to experience the new content.

New players can find out about Dragonica by visiting the official European Dragonica website at http://dragonica.gpotato.eu.

Dragonica: 25 v 25 side-scrolling guild battles

Dragonica is the free arcade-style 3D side-scrolling MMORPG developed by Barunson Interactive and published by Gala Networks Europe. This October will see the introduction of the “Tales of the Damned” expansion for European versions of Dragonica, and we are proud to announce information on the eagerly anticipated Emporia Tournament system.

Players who are members of any of the active Guilds of Dragonica are in for a treat this October. The Emporia Tournament is a Guild v Guild battleground that gives opposing teams the ability to attack an Emporia, with the aim of taking out their opponents cores, scattered throughout the brand new Emporia maps. Up to fifty players will be able to participate in frantic side-scrolling team-based action.

The Emporia Tournament system will work to a timetable that will be announced on the official European Dragonica website and will offer Guilds a regular series of events that they can spend their Guild experience to enter. Winning teams will get a variety of in-game prizes, as well as develop their Guild’s prestige and be in with a chance of gaining large amounts of experience for their Guild. This experience will unlock new Guild skills that Guild members can use during their adventures throughout Dragotaka.

The Emporia Tournament is just one of many new features being introduced by the “Tales of the Damned” expansion to European versions of Dragonica. In addition to this new feature, controller support, pets, an increase in the level cap to 65, many brand new field maps, mission maps, dungeons, bosses and a revised mission scoring system will be introduced. As with all gPotato.eu games, this and future updates are all available completely free of charge, and will be delivered by a patch (or for new players a new and updated client) during October.

Dragonica is available as a free-to-play game, meaning no subscriptions, ever! You can download the game client from http://dragonica.gpotato.eu and register for your free gPotato.eu account to play the game. European users who are travelling outside of Europe, you are now able to play Dragonica with gPotato while abroad by clicking the “Register my IP” button on the Dragonica website before logging into the game.

Dragonica Insider Attacks THQ*Ice content

Recently I was asked by THQ*Ice, as mentioned in episode nine of Dragonica Insider, to preview their 2nd continent. A few small problems occurred but THQ was more than willing to help me out with the problems as they happened. The new continent has a lot to offer players of Dragonica. The biggest aspect was that 3rd job would be open for everyone. New skills, new weapons, and new armor waited for them as they dawned the 3rd job. Monsters and bosses become little challenge now and players will be able to explore more of the beautiful world that was Dragonica.

While I was testing I was asked many times when it would be released, thinking I was perhaps a GM I always told the players I was a beta tester and was checking out the second continent, I felt the community was very excited for the new content and they wanted me to tell them everything about it. I was lucky enough to talk with the second highest level in the game and he helped give me some gold which helped a great deal in fixing my weapon, buying some armor, and buying some pots. I can tell from the players kindness towards me that THQ has a very good grip on this game and I can see great things for them.

Now the actual game play is exactly what I expected for the new continent. I got to run around with level 60s the whole time but sadly I was not outfitted with armor or pots at the beginning. Thq quickly fixed the pots they had given me before hand and I was given armor by all sorts of players in game. Anyways the content is a very eye pleasing area and the monsters are majestic, it pains me to have to slaughter them by the thousands, but of course I quickly get over that since the game is just so fun. My favorite place is of course frozen over. This winter wonderland is just beautiful and there is nothing I dislike about it. I found myself dieing many times there because I would get caught up in looking at the scenery and monsters. As I traveled to the end of the Dragonica Universe I would try to see ever place, monster, and boss.

I had loads of fun testing the new continent and was very happy with the treatment I got from THQ*Ice. Perhaps the funnest part of testing was that I have not one but four level 60s which were,to my knowledge, the only ones in the THQ version of Dragonica to have 3rd job skills and be that high of level. I was kinda disappointed that THQ did not give me that many skill points for these characters to get the important skills prier to 3rd job but they did try to give me more skill points later and I never received them, I know they tried to make the experience the best they could for me and because of that I have nothing bad to say about them. There were small bugs here and there like any other game but the game itself and the company are just so great, you can easily see that they do whatever it takes to make a great game for the players.

So to THQ: Thank you for this opportunity and I appreciate all the help you gave me. I'm sorry if I was too needy at times and if I was causing any problems. I am more than willing to test anything in the future for you. THQ don't stop the great experience you give your players and please let me test for you again.

Dragonica: Kundara Dungeon, Van Cliff Fortress and many more

gPotato Europe announces the Kundara Dungeon, Van Cliff Fortress and many more content updates to come in Dragonica.

Dragonica is the free arcade-style 3D side-scrolling MMORPG developed by Barunson Interactive and published by Gala Networks Europe Ltd. across Europe. Following a very successful launch in June, the game has recently been updated with the new high-level Kundara dungeon, and will soon open the doors of the terrifying Van Cliff Fortress along with several other major improvements.

Kicking off a series of highly anticipated content updates for Dragonica, the Kundara dungeon is a new high level dungeon inspired by South-American mythology. This new dungeon is already available on Dragonica Europe and will be followed in a few weeks by the Van Cliff Manor, a dark dungeon aimed at experienced adventurers. In it, players will have to battle against the undead armies in a maze of stone walls paved with traps, and survive the ferocious attacks of several bosses including Dracula, the Werewolf, the Gate Keeper Gargoyle, and finally the huge and terrifying Bone Dragon.

In addition to these two dungeons, the upcoming update will also feature a series of new regular and hero quests, which will delve into the background behind Dr. Farrel’s corruption by the witch Paris. Other features include UI improvement, personal character cards for the players to show off, new weapons and items, as well as a revision of the mission map results. All these new features will be added for free through a simple update of the game in early Autumn 2009.

Dragonica Review

Barunson Interactive is on a roll with their greatest masterpiece. Dragonica was one of the most anticipated MMORPGs ever since its development in 2006. Its super-deformed anime looks, pseudo-2D sidescroller, and cel-shaded graphics account for the anticipation and the hype. Numerous teaser gameplay videos generated much criticism and excitement from fans and critics. Early 2009 marked the beginning of a new adventure. Was the game worth the three-year wait?

The game shows off its prowess with an aesthetically-pleasing opening movie. Character creation and selection follows suit. Character creation only offers a few faces and hair selections, with bodies similar to a chibi anime form. Just like the characters, the environment looks like a 3D cartoon scenery. The developers did an artistic rendition of Dragonica’s world: lush, vibrant, alive and teeming with colors. The music fantastically complements the vibrant world, and despite the infinite loop, it sounds just as lively as the first time you’ve heard it.

Players can choose from 4 different job archetypes: warrior, thief, magician and archer. Each class has 2 different job progressions, with job changes occurring at level 20 and level 40. Character building is simple yet challenging. Stats are automatically distributed according to your class. However, skills have to be personally managed by arranging skill points provided per level. The skill system was made to prevent mastering up to 80% of the skills from first to third job. Skill point costs are in multiples of 5, the cheapest being 5 skill points per level. The game promotes different skill builds in each job, but it also forces the players to use skill reset items for a finer-tuned build. Otherwise, job progressions definitely offered multiple build varieties, a very thankful welcome in an MMORPG.

Dragonica doesn’t crimp on the quests. Most of the quests offered in the game are chained. Some single ones are also unlocked after fulfilling some conditions like the completion of a previous quest or attaining a certain level. Every single quest in the game reaps generous item, exp and/or monetary rewards. On the same note, repeatable quests often give twice the exp reward from a quest of a map’s average level. Unfortunately, the game still has its fair share of the grind. Some quests might be too difficult to fulfill, especially dungeon-based ones. Repeatable quests do give the necessary push in exp gains, but most of these can only be done once per day. Dragonica compensates the grinding aspect with a few incentives. A monster kill counter is added on the lower right corner of the screen. Characters gain treasure chests upon reaching a certain number of kills. The higher the kill count, the rarer the chest gets.

The maps in the game vary in size, but are huge, for the most part. Despite the vast map areas, monsters usually respawn at definitive points, which make camping a viable strategy when questing or grinding. Being a sidescrolling game, town maps look “long,” instead of vast. Constant visits to the town make you wish there was an easier way to reach the NPC you need to talk to, but unfortunately, running and hyperjumping are the only ways to go about. Some towns are also so far apart (Port of Winds and Libra), it takes a long trip through different field maps. This is compensated by the use of teleport scrolls though. Dungeon maps, on the other hand, are instanced and usually straightforward, with varying degrees of difficulty. The more difficult the dungeon, the more maps are added, and the higher the monster levels are. Each dungeon also ranks the characters’ performance according to combo and damage taken. Dungeons are definitely much more rewarding, item and exp-wise.

Other MMORPG staples are present, like PvP and item refinement. PvP is held in a different lobby with different arenas, divided into single or multiplayer matches. There’s minimal to moderate lag during the matches, making battles a bit bothersome but still doable. Guild sieges called Emporia Wars are also scheduled every week. Just like the arenas, some players might experience moderate lag during sieges, or in rare cases, abrupt disconnections. Next up is item refinement. This is done in two ways, by enhancement or increasing soul force. Unlike other MMOs, Dragonica gives players the chance to modify the rarity of equips through the soul force system. This gives random stat bonuses for that item. Enhancing the item raises the refine level and adds def/mdef bonuses instead.

And in conclusion, this answers the question posed a few paragraphs back. Dragonica was definitely worth the wait. Everything is lively, fast-paced and exciting. There’s the usual free MMORPG monotony as players play longer, but this is compensated by numerous in-game rewards. We can expect future fixes for the lag in PvP arenas, but so far, it’s still doable in its current state. Plus, more content will definitely be added, like pets and larger maps. Dragonica is gem on its own, it just needs to be cut and polished better when it goes commercial. This is a must play.

The Good: Numerous in-game rewards, vibrant visuals, combo system

The Bad: Lag in PvP arenas, specific respawn areas for monsters

Graphics: 9
Sound: 9
Gameplay: 8
Story: 8
Final Score: 8.5/10

Dragonica: Exclusive Interview with Max Stolberg!

Dragonica is a new MMORPG soon to be released by Gala Networks. It features the usual manga-style characters and classes, but has some tricks up its sleeve. Read the Interview between FreeMMGamer.com and Max Stolberg, Dragonica Producer with Gala Networks Europe, to find out all about it!

FreeMMOGamer: Could you introduce yourself and explain your role in Dragonica?

Hi there. Thank you very much for the opportunity of an interview with freemmogamer.com. My name is Max and as producer of Dragonica for the European market my job is to plan and coordinate the market entry of Dragonica. This includes the localisation, testing and launch of Dragonica and successively its EU operation. Hosting games on the gPotato.eu gaming portal, we already have quite an expertise in the free to play MMO market as publisher. Even though having only been established in 2006, we already are one of the market leaders in this sector with over 1.5 million registered users in France and Germany. Dragonica will be our first English language title we are publishing followed by the AAA free to play MMORPG Allods in autumn 2009.

FreeMMOGamer: How closely are you working with developers Barunson Interactive for the European release?

Gala Networks Europe’s strategy is to build the best possible relationships with the developers we’re working with. This of course means I’m communicating with Barunson on a daily basis and we discuss matters like localisation, schedule, balance and future game development to mention just a few of the topics. Barunson’s willingness to adjust Dragoncia to EU needs is quite impressive and very promising for the future success and user friendliness of the game. Relationship building also involves flying over to South Korea and meeting the people working in Barunson face to face and getting to know them better as well as inviting them back over to Europe for them to see how we work and what our community expects of a high quality free to play game.

FreeMMOGamer: Why the choice of an unusual side-scrolling perspective for a MMORPG? What are the main advantages?

To answer that question I usually quote our developer Barunson as I’ve asked the same question before: “We tried to make a game that everyone can easily enjoy and thus we chose a side scroll action game” (Barunson). They wanted their game to be different and deviate from the “me-too” approach of other major game developers who just emulate the same concept all over again and again. With the launch of Dragonica, side-scrolling games celebrate a well deserved come back of a brilliant and very fun way of playing games. Introducing a combo based action MMO which you can actually play with a controller like Xbox or SNES pad even, you will quickly realize it’s a must to play. You’ll also find all the features you expect from major MMOs these days including PvP & PvE endgame, guild wars, housing, a couple system, pet system and much more. And it’s absolutely free.

FreeMMOGamer: With its vibrant cartoon style Dragonica could easily be categorized as a MMO aimed at younger gamers. How far is this from the truth?

I agree that Dragonica’s cartoon style is primarily focussing on a “cute factor” which may appeal more to younger gamers. The whole concept of a really fast paced action oriented jump and run arcade game however is appealing to a much broader audience: it is appealing to retro fans, to casual and hardcore players, younger and more mature players as well as all console players looking for a PC alternative. Dragonica is like a mix between “Super Smash Brothers” and the old-school “Golden Axe” and combines all mordern and up to date MMO features with a really enjoyable gameplay. Just try it out yourselves really, I have no doubt you’ll like it.

FreeMMOGamer: Besides language, are there any specific differences between the several versions being developed?

There will be no differences in the setup of the European versions. English, German and French will be running with the same balance put in place and the same levelling curve. There of course will be the option of changing the balance of one language version in particular if we’ll receive reasonable suggestions by our community. Gala Networks Europe has a philosophy or taking our community’s feedback very seriously and fortunately our developer Barunson also believes in the publisher’s ability to determine the best fit for each market.

FreeMMOGamer: Could you introduce the four character classes? Which one is your favourite and why?

Currently, there are four playable classes in the game: the Warrior, Mage, Archer and Thief. All of those can progress in a different profession upon reaching level 20 and then again upon reaching level 40. The warrior currently is my favourite, he’s strong, very resilient and has a good punch; like a rock in the sea basically. The mage is very fragile in contrast but when she decides to attack you, you better go out of her way. Mages are the DPS classes of Dragonica. The Thief is a bit more resilient but still quite fragile having mastered the art of slice and dice attacks to simply shred his enemy in the air. Very cool, honestly. Then the Archer. My first class. It’s this class that is probably played most, simply because you’ll never see an enemy coming close enough to hit you. And even if he hits you, you’ll just moonwalk back and shoot again; a piece of cake.

FreeMMOGamer: How is the combat system different from previous games? Do you see it as more beat’em up than MMO, or a mix of the two? And how do the combos work?

Dragonica is unique in its approach to form a hybrid MMO & action side-scrolling game. You’ll not only find all the normal MMO features including achievement system, housing, customizable characters, marriage system, pet system, guild and group PvP to just name a few. You’ll also be able to experience a unique style 360° depth and turn concept in which you can attack the enemy from all directions, move in most directions but have the feeling of being back in the 90s.

Basically, you move from left to right or backwards if you missed your enemy and you need to hit them exactly. There is no “tabbing around” like in most major MMOs. You just execute your skill and if you aimed it right, you hit the monster. If you practice a bit, you’ll be able to make good use of the unique combo system as well. The longer you’ll be able to hit monsters in a row, the more EXP you’ll get. So if you hit one monster 3 times, you’ll be at 3 combos. If you’ve managed to hit several monsters in one killing spree without stopping, you may reach 150 combos and gain 1.5x the normal EXP. But also combos of 500 and higher are possible. And you may earn your first achievement then…

FreeMMOGamer: What social incentives are there for players to create a party and interact with each other?

Dragonica is very much a party focused game really. First, of course it is much nicer to play together than alone but there are of course also in game mechanics that help :-). First, as you may know there are numerous mission maps in the game and even though you may be able to clear them yourselves, the final bonus in terms of items and experience as well as the rankings and achievements are based on time. So you have to be fast. And you’re faster in a group of course. Second, you’ll be able to form a couple and even marry and will receive certain benefits from that in terms of buffs, free teleports and others too. Finally, you earn Friend Points too and these you can later again exchange against experience or – well maybe something else in the future.

FreeMMOGamer: Besides the main quest, players will be able to fight in a variety of multiplayer modes. What are those modes?

Instances basically have two modes: the normal arcade mode and a hero mode. Only after you’ve managed to stand up against all the different mini bosses of the four arcade levels of a mission map, you’ll be able to enter for the hero mode. And this hero mode you have to do in a group which means you’ll at least have to be two players. Don’t get me wrong though. That by no means implies you can do all the arcade levels by yourself. You’d be well advised not to do try as you’ll get benefits from playing in a group and basically advance faster.

Regarding multiplayer, PvE and mission maps are just one example how to fight with your comrades. The other very prominent multiplayer feature of Dragonica is PvP. Here, you’ll have a variety of options; a 10 player deathmatch or 5vs5 group battles and later on also capture the flag and relic destruction will give you the chance to show real skill. Then, starting with level 20 you’ll be able to engage in 25vs25 guild battles, the so called Emporia Wars. There’s much more waiting for the players though!

FreeMMOGamer: What is the release date?

We plan to open the Dragonica Closed Beta phase across the English, German and French language in the middle of May and if everything goes well, we’ll start Open Beta for the European territory in June already. Even though Open Beta still is a testing phase and by no means can be considered live or without the need for some corrections in gameplay and balance according to our community’s feedback, there won’t be a character wipe after Open Beta started.

FreeMMOGamer: Any other important details about Dragonica you wish to share with our readers?

Having had the opportunity to test Dragonica quite a bit with my team here in Dublin, Ireland and having seen competitions run on Dragonica already while being showcased in Tipperary, Ireland I can tell you one thing: the game really is brilliant! It’s one of the very few really good free-to-play games I know.

FreeMMOGamer: Thank you for your time!
